Integrated Program

The Integrated Residency Program offered by the Ohio State University Department of Plastic Surgery accepts two applicants for the PGY-1 year annually. The Integrated program is six years in duration. The integrated program is structured in blocks aimed at providing a strong foundation in the management of surgical patients with increasingly progressive responsibility according to the level of training, and knowledge and training in surgical subspecialties that are closely related to plastic surgery.

The curriculum provides experience across all areas of the discipline, including anesthesiology, burn management, critical care medicine, emergency medicine, general surgery, oncologic surgery, orthopedic surgery, otolaryngology, pediatric surgery, trauma management, and vascular surgery. The Integrated Program consists of two specially structured years of general surgery and applicable surgical sub-specialties.

After successfully completing the two prerequisite years, residents enter four years of plastic surgery training with rotations in four freestanding health care systems: The Ohio State University Medical Center, Riverside Methodist Hospital, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and Grant Medical Center. During these final years, residents learn all aspects of plastic surgery including facial and hand trauma surgery, microsurgery, pediatric plastic surgery including cleft lip and palate, oncologic reconstructive surgery, and aesthetic surgery.

Graduates of this program assume positions in fellowships and enter both academic and community practice. Although all appointments with Ohio State are made for one year and must be renewed annually, satisfactory performance will ensure completion of the entire six-year curriculum and will qualify the trainee for the examinations of the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
